Introduction

These christian prayers appeared for the first time in the 'Wonder-year' of the French ďż˝vangďż˝ liques, 1533. Almost simultaneously in Lyon and Paris. In Lyon an enlarged edition of Marot's Adolescence Clementine was printed by françois Juste ( 23/2/1533). It is not at all certain that Marot authorised Juste to print it (is contains some poems ('placards') attacking and ridiculing the heresy-hunters of the Faculty of Theology of Paris); nevertheless: the poems migth well be authentical. They are headed with a very interesting introduction: "Le Pater noster, & le Credo en francoys faict & traduitz par ledict C.M. & offert na guyeres a la Royne de Navarre." (... made by Marot and recently offered to the Queen of Navarre).

In an enlarged reprint (July 1533) a Benediction devant manger was added and the texts were gathered under a heading: "La Foy d'ung Chrestien". In the same year - 1533 - these prayers (or better, these devotional and confessional texts) appear in print in a section of a curious booklet about orthographical reform published by the Parisian printer Antoine Augereau: "Briefve doctrine pour deuement escrire". This booklet opens with two "Epistres familiere", one about prayer, the other about love. Marot's texts appear at the end and are gathered under the heading "Instruction & Foy d'ung chrestien" (the instruction and faith of a christian). In the enlarged edition of this booklet (December 1533) we find - next to the Pater and the Creed - also the Angelic Greeting (Ave Maria) and some prayers before and after dinner, including a "child's grace". These prayers from Epistres/Doctrine/instruction were integrated (by Marot, it is doubtful, he had left/fled France in the aftermath of the Affaire des placards) in La Suite de l'Adolescence clementine (1533/4), where they form a separate section, together with Psalm 6. In 1538 Marot included them in his Oeuvres (1538) with the exception of one: the "benediction devant manger", which probably is not authentical. In 1543 two new prandial prayers appear in the appendix of the Cinquante Pseaumes.

In the reformed hymnbooks melodies (2 different ones) were provided for these texts. Especially the prandial prayers were quite often put to music by contemporary composers, but often without reference to these melodies (e.g. Clemens non Papa, Tielman Susato - click here).
